York-Durham Heritage Railway

Experience nature at its best, while travelling over the Oak Ridges Moraine, a unique geological feature less than 1 hour from Toronto. Ride in a heritage coach from the 1950’s or in a vintage coach from the 1920’s – the only heritage train in the Greater Toronto Area. Watch the scenery from our doors-open baggage car or ride with the crew in our red caboose where you can enjoy panoramic views from the cupola. Regular trains operate on Sundays from June through to the end of October, travelling the Uxbridge-Stouffville corridor with additional Saturday trains during the fall colour season, and separate scheduling for some theme train trips.

Our train is equipped with a wheelchair accessible washroom, snack bar and souvenir stand. The Heritage Train is not wheelchair accessible at the Stouffville station, however, trips beginning and ending in Uxbridge do allow for full wheelchair accessibility to the train. For kids, we have face painting, balloon animals, a toy train to enjoy. We also have an onboard snackbar for refreshments you can enjoy while listening to our onboard trip commentary.

The rail line that we use was built in the late 1860’s as the Toronto and Nipissing (T&N) Railway. It was built to allow its owner, William Gooderham, a well-known distiller from Toronto, to carry grain to his distillery as well as lumber for export and cordwood for resale. To avoid expensive earth moving, the line was constructed by following the natural profile of the land as closely as possible. Today this has resulted in a gorgeous meandering train ride that wonderfully showcases the lush nature of York Region. The York-Durham Heritage Railway reopened the line between Uxbridge and Stouffville in 1996 and has been running on summer weekends since then.

Besides regular scheduled train rides, the York-Durham Heritage Railway also has special events including the Teddy Bear Train, the Strawberry Festival Train, Family Halloween Train Rides, and of course the Santa Train at Christmas (to name a few).
